Bouldin Creek is one of South Austin’s most beloved inner neighborhoods — the walkable grid just south of Lady Bird Lake between South Congress and South First, where renovated 1920s and 1930s bungalows sit alongside modern infill homes and coffee shops, and the mix of longtime residents and design-conscious newer arrivals gives the neighborhood its distinctive character. The living rooms here tend to be intentional, carefully renovated, and clean — the kind of spaces where a mounted TV should belong in the room rather than dominate it. So when a Bouldin Creek homeowner reached out about installing a 75″ Samsung TV with the power cord hidden inside the wall using a code-compliant power relocation kit, we knew this was exactly the install where doing it right — legally and aesthetically — would make the finished space feel intentional rather than improvised.
The setup was a 75″ Samsung TV mounted on a low-profile fixed wall mount with a UL-listed in-wall power transfer kit bringing a code-compliant outlet directly behind the TV. We located and anchored into multiple studs (a 75″ Samsung weighs 60-80 pounds and requires proper multi-stud anchoring), set the mount level and centered on the wall, and hung the TV with precise alignment. Then the power kit: we cut a code-compliant receptacle box behind the TV, ran in-wall-rated wiring inside the wall down to a second code-compliant receptacle at the standard outlet height, and terminated both ends properly. That’s the legally correct way to have power behind the TV without visible cord — a standard TV power cord is not rated for in-wall use and running one inside a wall is both an electrical code violation and a real fire risk. HDMI and signal cables were routed through the wall via low-voltage pass-through plates down to the equipment location. Finished wall: only the TV, no power cord, no visible cabling, and every single detail code-compliant.
The in-wall power relocation kit is one of the most misunderstood pieces of a professional TV install, and it’s also one of the biggest differentiators between a real installer and someone cutting corners. Here’s the code question in simple terms: standard TV power cords aren’t rated for in-wall use. They’re rated for open-air use only, and running a standard cord inside a wall violates the National Electrical Code and creates a real fire risk because the cord isn’t rated to dissipate heat inside a closed cavity. The legally correct solution is a UL-listed in-wall power transfer kit: an in-wall-rated receptacle behind the TV connected by in-wall-rated wiring to a second receptacle at the standard outlet height. Both receptacles are code-compliant, the wiring between them is rated for in-wall use, and the entire system passes electrical inspection. Some installers skip this and run a standard cord inside the wall anyway. We don’t. The extra $75-150 in kit cost is meaningful protection against a fire risk that shows up years down the road, and the finished wall looks identical either way. There’s no reason to do it the wrong way.
