Rosedale is one of Central Austin’s most desirable and thoughtfully preserved neighborhoods — the quiet grid between MoPac and Lamar just north of 45th, where renovated Craftsman bungalows and mid-century homes sit alongside a walkable coffee-shop culture and one of the most stable resident bases in the city. The living rooms here tend to be intentional and design-conscious, and the fireplaces — often original with tile or brick surrounds updated during renovations — are the natural focal point of the room. So when a Rosedale homeowner reached out about installing a 65″ Sony Bravia with a matching soundbar over their renovated tile fireplace, we knew this was the kind of install where every detail — from mount selection through soundbar placement to cable routing — needed to match the care the rest of the room had already been given.
The setup was a 65″ Sony Bravia mounted on a low-profile tilting wall mount above the tile fireplace, with a matching soundbar mounted directly below the TV on a slim wall-mount bracket. We diamond-drilled the tile carefully (tile is unforgiving of any drilling mistake, and one cracked tile costs meaningful money to replace and color-match, especially on a renovated fireplace where the tile may have been custom-ordered), pre-marked every anchor point across the mantel and the surround, and used masonry-rated anchors set into the mortar joints wherever possible to preserve the tile surface. The TV mount went in flush against the surround with the Sony hung level. The soundbar bracket set right below the TV with proper vertical clearance so the soundbar wouldn’t interfere with the tilt range. Signal cable from the TV to the soundbar routed cleanly through the wall via a low-voltage pass-through plate, and power to both devices routed to a code-compliant outlet. Finished install: Sony Bravia and soundbar as a clean stacked unit over the tile fireplace, no visible cabling, every angle checked from the couch.
The soundbar-and-fireplace combination is one of the more common install requests we get and also one of the most commonly done poorly, so it’s worth explaining what actually matters. First: soundbar placement. Below the TV is almost always the right answer over a fireplace — placing the soundbar above the TV puts the sound source above ear height and creates a fighting sound field with the reflective mantel and ceiling. Below the TV puts sound at ear level from the couch and gives you the tightest dialogue clarity. On a mantel is workable if there’s no other option but the mantel edge often blocks part of the driver. Second: soundbar bracket selection matters. A slim wall-mount bracket that keeps the soundbar close to the wall preserves the flush look of the whole install. Third: HDMI ARC or eARC signal cable between the TV and soundbar has to be routed properly — running a bare cable down the tile face looks worse than having no soundbar at all. In-wall low-voltage pass-through plates behind both devices give you clean cable termination without violating fire code. Fourth: Sony Bravia specifically pairs well with soundbars because Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR handles audio processing through the TV that most other TVs don’t — you can get away with a smaller soundbar because the Sony is doing more work on the audio side than a comparable Samsung or LG would.
