Zilker is one of Central Austin’s most desirable and design-conscious neighborhoods — the walkable pocket south of Lady Bird Lake between Barton Springs Road and MoPac, where renovated bungalows and mid-century homes share the neighborhood with newer builds and generations of design-forward Austin professionals have made it one of the most distinctive communities in the city. The living rooms here are intentional, and natural stone fireplaces are common architectural features from thoughtful renovations. So when a Zilker homeowner reached out about installing a 65″ Samsung Frame TV with a matched slim soundbar underneath onto their natural stone fireplace, we knew this was a design-first buyer who picked Frame specifically because they didn’t want a black rectangle dominating the living room — same buyer psychology we covered in our recent 75″ Frame + Sonos Arc Ultra install in Allandale. Getting Frame installs right on natural stone requires specific technique because stone doesn’t cooperate the way drywall does.

The setup was a 65″ Samsung Frame TV mounted on its included Slim Fit Wall Mount attached to the natural stone fireplace above the hearth, with a matched slim soundbar mounted below at ear level from the couch. Natural stone installation requires specific technique that most installers avoid or approximate. We evaluated the stone face for the least-visible drill locations (working around visible seams, matching the mortar joints where possible for the cleanest final appearance), diamond-drilled through the stone with the correct bit and technique to avoid cracking the face, and set masonry-rated anchors sized for the ~45 pound TV plus mount plus soundbar load with substantial safety margin. The Slim Fit Wall Mount was leveled and centered accounting for any subtle unevenness in the stone surface — stone is not flat like drywall, and getting the TV to hang truly level requires shimming compensation the standard install approach doesn’t do. The slim soundbar was mounted below on a compatible slim bracket at ear level from the couch, HDMI eARC connection between the TV and soundbar routed as invisibly as possible (visible cabling between TV and soundbar defeats the Frame aesthetic completely). Art Mode configured with the customer’s art rotation, and picture calibrated from the actual viewing position. Finished install: 65″ Frame reading as framed art on natural stone with the slim soundbar as a clean linear audio anchor below.

Natural stone fireplace installs have specific considerations that drywall and even tile installs don’t share, and getting them right requires understanding the material. Stone is not a uniform surface — natural stone has variation in hardness across the face, seams between individual stones, and irregular surface flatness that varies from one location to another. Four things matter. First: drill location selection. Every drill hole into visible stone face is a permanent modification the customer will live with for decades. Careful evaluation of the stone surface for the least-visible locations — hitting mortar joints where possible, avoiding the most prominent stones, planning fastener spacing that reads as intentional rather than random — matters more than most installers acknowledge. Second: diamond bit selection and drilling technique. Natural stone requires diamond core bits at the correct diameter for the anchor spec, run at the right speed with proper technique to avoid cracking the stone face. Getting this wrong destroys the customer’s fireplace, and stone repair is expensive and often visible even after repair. Third: anchor selection for stone specifically. Standard concrete anchors aren’t always the right call for natural stone — masonry-rated anchors sized for both the actual load AND the specific stone composition matter for long-term reliability. Fourth: surface flatness compensation. Stone is not drywall — the surface has subtle unevenness that shifts the mount plane away from level unless the installer compensates with proper shimming and mount alignment. Getting the TV to hang truly level and flush against natural stone takes deliberate technique. Skip any of these and you have a Frame TV that doesn’t sit right on a stone fireplace that has visible drill damage. Do them right and the finished install reads as intentional integration with the architectural feature.
