Cat Mountain is one of West Austin’s most established affluent enclaves — the wooded hillside community northwest of downtown Austin adjacent to Mount Bonnell along Loop 360, where custom homes on generous hillside lots take advantage of the topography and Lake Austin views and established professional families have built primary living rooms designed for serious entertaining. So when a Cat Mountain homeowner reached out about installing a 65″ LG G6 flagship Gallery OLED over their fireplace and integrating it with a proper hi-fi audio system — floor-standing front speakers with in-ceiling surround channels — we knew this was a customer who understood both premium picture quality AND premium audio. Same real home theater integration work we covered in our recent Steiner Ranch receiver + discrete speakers install — different equipment, same commitment to actually delivering integrated home theater rather than just hanging a TV with a soundbar underneath.
The setup was a 65″ LG G6 flagship Gallery OLED mounted on the customer’s drywall fireplace above the hearth with the LG Gallery Wall Mount for near-flush profile, integrated with floor-standing front speakers positioned at either side of the fireplace and in-ceiling surround speakers positioned behind the main seating area for proper surround field. LG G-series specifically ships with a Gallery Wall Mount engineered to hold the OLED as close to the wall as possible — the flagship design premise depends on the flush profile, and the drywall fireplace surface supports that better than stone or tile ever could because drywall allows a truly clean mount. We anchored the Gallery mount into multiple studs with proper hardware sized for both static load and the near-flush profile requirement, then handled the real work: full integration with the hi-fi audio system. HDMI eARC connection from the G6 to the customer’s receiver for lossless audio pass-through including Dolby Atmos. Speaker wire connections verified at every channel — the floor-standing fronts, the in-ceiling surrounds, center channel, and subwoofer if present. Room correction calibration run through the receiver’s built-in system to tune the mixed floor-standing plus in-ceiling configuration to the actual room acoustics — this specific speaker mix requires more calibration attention than uniform speaker types because the floor-standers and ceiling speakers have different dispersion characteristics that the room correction has to compensate for. Full playback verification from the customer’s viewing position confirming every channel works, picture is calibrated, and audio timing is correct across the different speaker types. Finished install: 65″ G6 flagship OLED reading flush against the fireplace with hi-fi audio flowing from proper front speakers and ceiling-integrated surrounds — real home theater with real hi-fi sensibilities.
Floor-standing front speakers paired with in-ceiling surrounds is a specific home theater configuration that’s genuinely different from most residential setups, and it’s worth understanding why homeowners choose it. Floor-standing speakers are the premium hi-fi choice for front L/R channels because they deliver full-range performance — deep bass, wide dynamic range, and off-axis performance that soundbars and small satellite speakers can’t match. Serious two-channel music listening AND serious home theater front-channel performance both benefit from proper floor-standers. But floor-standing surround speakers create a problem in most living rooms: they’re big, they need placement behind the seating, and they visually clutter the space. In-ceiling speakers solve that problem cleanly — the surround channels disappear architecturally while still delivering proper surround field. The result is a hybrid configuration that gets premium performance on the channels where it matters most (front hi-fi mains) and clean architectural integration on the channels where visual weight isn’t wanted (rear surrounds). This specific configuration requires more calibration attention than a uniform speaker system because floor-standing and in-ceiling speakers have different dispersion characteristics — the room correction system has to compensate for the different behaviors so the full surround field reads as coherent rather than as “loud speakers in front, quiet ceiling in back.” Getting the calibration right takes more setup time but delivers the best of both approaches: real hi-fi sound quality where you notice it and invisible speaker integration where you don’t want to see the equipment.
